openSUSE Forums Hits 30,000 Users!
"Short but sweet post here: Getting a few numbers on community growth for the openSUSE Day introduction at LinuxTag, I noticed that the openSUSE Forums have now passed 30,000 users! That’s pretty amazing considering that we started the merged forums on June 10, 2008. In about one year’s time, we’ve seen more than 30,000 people sign up for the forums. Congrats to everyone who works on the forums, and everyone in the community who has participated!"

Build Service

OWN-oxygen-Build-Service.png
Adrian Schröter: Build Service Project Cleanup Round
"we got more than 6500 projects since the start of the opensuse.org Build Service instance (plus the projects which got removed again by their owners). These projects contain more than 13000 repositories, which get need to get in sync by our service. This takes obviously resources on the server side and quite a number of these projects are not touched since a while. So I assume they are not needed anymore. So I think it is a good idea to free the resources from these projects and give it to us active people :) This will basically affect all projects, where no source changes happened since 1 year or more. We have basically 961 "old projects" and further 2300 empty projects (no packages inside). ..."

openSUSE News: openSUSE at LinuxTag Pictures: Day One
"Once again, it’s LinuxTag time, and (of course) openSUSE is there. Today was day one of LinuxTag, and the openSUSE crew turned out to talk openSUSE, Build Service, and SUSE Studio. The first day of LinuxTag was off to a bit of a slow start, with traffic a bit lighter than it was last year — but we still had quite a few people stopping by the booth and asking about openSUSE, playing with the netbooks and other demo systems, learning about SUSE Studio and the openSUSE Build Service, and generally having a good time. If you’re in Berlin or nearby, be sure to visit LinuxTag this week! LinuxTag runs through Saturday, June 27th. Don’t forget, Saturday is openSUSE Day at LinuxTag! We have great talks in store for everybody at LinuxTag, including presentations on LTSP in openSUSE, Wine on openSUSE, AppArmor, and what’s new in openSUSE 11.2."
Gabriel Stein: openSUSE and Free Software Conference
"Well.. I have some photos from International Free Software Conference in Brazil. We have an openSUSE Users Group booth, with DVDs, T-Shirts and a lot of curious people about openSUSE. Many Thanks to Vagner Farias from Novell and Joe Brockmeier for all effort to bring DVDs and T-Shirts. openSUSE Rocks!"

Tips and Tricks

SUSE Linux Enterprise in the Americas : Find out what’s changed on a system
"For those who have been handed the keys to a system and simply been told, “It’s not working”, it can be very useful to know what files have been modified from the stock installation of the system. If you are working with an RPM-based installation, such as Suse Linux Enterprise Server, the following command (by way of Linux Journal) can be very useful."
Ben Kevan : Problems Connecting to Yahoo Messanger w/ Pidgin
"If you’ve recently have had problems logging into your yahoo account you may not be the only one. On my systems all of a sudden it stopped working and once I added the host entry bammm it worked. (was able to ping the name just fine, so forward lookups were ok.)"
Jigish Gohil : Stop ssh brute force attack using SuSEfirewall
Did you ever want to know how to hamper a hacker? There are many ways, but not many who are so simple like this example is. Try yourself and after that write an article in the forum if it worked.
Thomas Biege : SELinux on openSUSE 11.1
"openSUSE release 11.1 will be available in a few ticks. I tried the beta5 and RC1 and it seems that 11.1 will run fast, stable and comes with a good set of new software. From the security perspective one thing would be really interesting: SELinux support. 11.1 comes with all necessary patches to enable SELinux but unfortunately it does not run by default. I hope to change it for 11.2."
Weekly Code Snippets
Well, this time we have XSL and C#, but we also have Python and Qt C++. John Anderson wrote about XSL, which is very powerful, it is sometimes more comfortable with doing certain operations in C# and luckily it is pretty simple to call C# libraries from XSL. His second tutorial is about Python, where tests a bit an IDE. Sebastian Schöbinger made a small tutorial how to convert a binary number into decimal numbers and back.
Aneruth Balaj: Installing a .tar.gz file
"Many of you ,(those who are new to linux) must be wondering how on earth to get the softwares installed?Believe me,even I thought the same.I was actually struggling with my VLC package for Linux.I started off with Open Suse XI with absolutely no prior knowledge and almost screwed up my system. So this tutorial should be able to get you running with respect to installation of .tar.gz files.. What is a .tar.gz file? .tar.gz file is a format registered under GNU. .tar represents uncompressed version of packaging, which was used in the earlier days. After applying some compression techniques such as Gzip ,etc. it led to a new format ,which was compressed form of tar and hence the name .tar.gz ..."

New/Updated Applications @ openSUSE

OWN-oxygen-New-Updated-Applications.png
Michal Hrušecký: MySQL 5.4 in openSUSE Build Service
"Currently there are several MySQL versions released by SUN. Latest version marked as stable is MySQL 5.1. This version is in build service for some time already and you may noticed that it is on it's way to Factory (no yet there, but working on it). Other newer releases are 5.4 and 6.0. 5.4 is currently in beta stage and date of stable release should be announced later this year. 6.0 is in alpha stage and it might take quite some time till it will be released as stable. So what? Well, recently I mentioned splitting server: database repository and creating UNSTABLE branch. One reason to do this was to provide a place where experimental version of MySQL can live. And so I packaged 5.4 and it is now available in server: database: UNSTABLE repository. Why you might be interested in testing MySQL 5.4? According to the release notes, main difference between 5.1 and 5.4 are performance and scalability improvements."
Ben Kevan: Google Chrome Unstable Build 3.0.190.2 released openSUSE Packages here
"The newest release of the Chrome Unstable browser is upon us.. I’m not sure what fixes this build brings us, but I know we still don’t have basic features like plugins etc. I’ve made some rpm’s to make it easier for you to install on openSUSE: ..."

Lluis Sanchez: Debugger screenshotting
"The debugger integration in MonoDevelop is progressing, lots of work in the past weeks. I'm going to show what is supported right now, altough much work is still left to make everything stable. Everything I'm showing here works both for the MDB and GDB backends, unless explicitly stated. First of all, this is the Attach to Process window. Notice the "Debugger" combo at the bottom. It allows you selecting which debugger you want to use to start the debug session (MDB or GDB): ..."
susegeek: PeaZip – Crossplatform File Archiver Manager in openSUSE

metaverse: More Free and Open Source Tools for Writers
"It’s funny how social media can work so well sometimes. I happened to be playing with a new Twitter client (Choqok for KDE, if you must know) over the weekend and TweetOpenSource had a link to 100 Awesome Open Source Tools for Writers, Journalists, and Bloggers. After a quick look, I retweeted the link. Anne Wayman, who used to run the Freelance Writing page at About.com, and has since struck out on her own, saw my retweet and posted it on her blog. I’m now returning the favor (Thanks, Anne!). Anyway, the list is interesting. While not everything on the list is open source (Evernote for sure, and perhaps there are others that I’m not aware of), everything is free. All the tools I talked about at the WritersUA conference are on this list. I haven’t used a bunch of these tools, and I look forward to trying many of them."

Maximumpc.com/Will Kraft: How to Customize Your Linux Desktop - From GTK to Compiz
"The days of ugly Linux desktops are a thing of the past. Modern distros include many tools and options that enable them to look good and be more useful. Unlike Windows, Linux has several different widget toolkits. The most well-known widget engines are GTK+, (distributed with GNOME) and QT. (pronounced “cute”) Widgets are the various elements which make up a program's GUI: scrollbars, arrows, checkboxes, etc. However, take note that QT or GTK widgets are not the same thing as desktop widgets."
Computerworlduk.com/John Mark V. Tuazon: Kaspersky releases beta of Linux antivirus
"IT security firm Kaspersky Lab has released the beta version of its antivirus software for Linux file systems. As security threats escalate every year, even Linux servers and operating systems have become prime targets of malware attacks, it said. Officially named Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Linux File Server 6.0, the new antivirus software will address security issues passing through Linux file servers before infiltrating other components of a heterogeneous networks, such as Windows workstations."
Aaron Seigo: KDE 4.3 branched, trunk is now 4.4
"The release team has just done something a bit different from past release cycles to test out some modifications to our usual work flow: with the release of the first release candidate, 4.3 has been immediately branched off of the mainline trunk, and trunk is now 4.4. In the past we've done this only when the new release is actually made, not during the release candidates. This gives people working on 4.4 features, or fixes that can only go into 4.4 due to things like string changes, a free hand without having to wait out the weeks during the extra hard freeze that comes with release candidates. This is very nice timing for Akademy, which is coming up very soon now."
